Rachel Anne McAdams
Rachel Anne McAdams was born on November
17, 1978, in London, Ontario, Canada, to Sandra Kay (Gale), an RN and Lance
Frederick McAdams, truck driver and furniture mover. She is English, Welsh and
Irish-born. Rachel started acting at the age of thirteen. She was already
appearing in Shakespearean plays in summer theater camps. Rachel graduated with
honors from York University with a BFA in Theater. After her debut on
television on Disney's The Famous Jett Jackson in 1998, Rachel appeared in
Canadian TV's Slings and Arrows 2003. The comedy drama follows the struggle of
Shakespearean theater groups. Rachel was awarded the Gemini Award for her
performance in 2003. The role she played in Mean Girls (2004) as Regina George
instantly landed her in the top tier of Hollywood's list of young actors. After
the film, she was cast as the opposite of Ryan Gosling in The Notebook (2004).
The Notebook was a big hit at the box office and was soon the top romantic
drama for a new generation of filmgoers. McAdams and Gosling began to fall in
love while filming, and continued to stay in touch throughout 2007's middle.
McAdams was then able to showcase her talents onscreen with the manic comedy
Wedding Crashers (2005), the thriller Red Eye (2005), as well as the holiday
drama The Family Stone (2005).McAdams then began exploring the world of
independent cinema through Married Life (2007), which debuted at Toronto Film
Festival and also featured Pierce Brosnan, Chris Cooper and Patricia Clarkson.
Following her roles in The Lucky Ones, a military drama State of Play, and The
Time Traveler's Wife (2009) McAdams was a co-star with Jude Law and Robert
Downey Jr. in Guy Ritchie's blockbuster international Sherlock Holmes. McAdams
played the plucky producer of a failing morning television show in Morning
Glory (2010), the materialistic fiancee of Owen Wilson in Woody Allen's
Midnight in Paris (2011), and returned to the romantic drama genre in the
critically acclaimed film The Vow (2012) opposite Channing Tatum. McAdams also
stars alongside Terrence Malick in To the Wonder (2012) and Noomi Rapace in
Passion (2012) in Brian De Palma's thriller.
